FAQs
French Polishing
Process of coating wood with a solution of shellac dissolved in alcohol, using a "rubber" made of rag and cotton wool instead of with a brush. The alcohol evaporates, leaving the shellac deposited upon the wood, producing the finest looking finish for furniture.

Inlay
Process of ornamenting a surface by setting into it material of different color or substance, usually in such a manner as to preserve a continuous plane.

Marquetry
Material, such as wood or ivory, inlaid piece by piece into a wood surface in an intricate design and veneered to another surface, especially of furniture, for decoration.

Veneer
Thin slices of wood, usually thinner than 3 mm (1/8 inch), which are typically glued onto core panels (wood, particle board or medium-density fiberboard) to produce flat panels such as doors, tops and panels for cabinets, parquet floors and parts of furniture. They are also used in marquetry.

Carving
Form of sculpting wood by means of a cutting tool held in the hand (this may be a power tool), resulting in a wooden figure or figurine (this may be abstract in nature) or in the sculptural ornamentation of a wooden object.
